D45-4A/.../Z     OO 4MM CLASS 45 NAMEPLATES £6.99

With a lot of help from various forum contributors, here we have the full collection of the Class 45 "unofficial" hand-painted names for 4mm OO-gauge. Presented together with the Tinsley rose, 41-A shed plates, engine numbers, and data panels, plus the Tinsley snail or "E" where appropriate.

Each pack includes:
  • Three sets of side decals - one spare,
  • Using clear waterslide film backing,
  • All the details to re-name and re-number a BR blue 45/0 or 45/1 model.
Simply cut roughly around the transfers, soak in water for less than a minute until the clear film floats off the backing, and slide on to the model. Remember clear film decals work best on glossy surfaces. When dry, we recommend you varnish seal the details to protect them.

Click on the images to enlarge a view of some of the options. Those are actual scans of the printed decals, on their pale blue backing, with the brightness toned down to make the white printing more visible here.

The Class 45 names were all painted between the long side grills and the plated over small grill near to the cab door at one end. You will need to remove the original numbers on the model before fitting the replacement decals - usually some methylated or white spirits on a cotton bud will lift off white printing.

We include a second final version of 45106 as the plain white painted "BABS" "EX'VULCAN'".

Two names were added when the Class 45 engines were renumbered for use in the Derby Technical Centre: 97411 (45034) "TOPAZ" and 97413 (45066) "AMETHYST".

Royal Fusilier 45046 and Lytham St Annes 45022/97409 were not "unofficial" names. As modelled here, they were painted after the removal of the official nameplates. The decal versions include black bolt holes where the former names were mounted.

Bachmann's latest Class 45/0 model 45048 "The Royal Marines" made for Modelzone, or the much earlier Replica Railway's Class 45/1 models, are ideal for these decals. Suitable models often appear for sale on eBay, notably "second" body tops for the Bachmann model 45048 where the names have not been printed on.

All in standard modern BR blue livery when named during 1987, the real Class 40/1 engines had the smooth noses with twin marker lights and a high visibility centre light between them. The Class 40/0 engines lacked the added middle light. Converting a model body of say a new Bachmann 45/0 in to a 45/1 is as simple as adding a high intensity light, white metal castings of which are readily available - e.g. in various Craftsman kits:

Note Taliesin was a name also applied to Class 47 engine 47337, while Vampire was used on a Class 37, different designs of those other plates are also available.
