OO 4MM CLASS 47 NAMEPLATES

From the memorable list of some 89 different Tinsley unofficial Class 47 names, using surviving photographs we have recreated a collection of 83 precisely matched decal options. Mainly for BR Blue locos, there were also Railfreight grey engines both with and without red stripe, BR Blue large arrows and even a Dutch liveried engine. We have modelled the nameplates, numbers and special details.
To model the remaining names, we need further good close-up photographs. If you can help with any of the following, please get in touch: 47098 "ORIOLE", 47145/47281 "MERDDIN EMRYS", 47209 "BITTERN", 47309 "KITTIWAKE", 47316 "WREN", 47362 "SARACEN" and 47523 "RAILFREIGHT".
Each pack includes:
- Three sets of decals - one spare,
- Using clear waterslide film backing,
- All the details to re-name and re-number a Class 47 model.
Simply cut roughly around the transfers, soak in water for less than a minute until the clear film floats off the backing, and slide on to the model. Remember clear film decals work best on glossy surfaces. When dry, we recommend you varnish seal the details to protect them - a final satin coat all over the model gives a factory-finish effect.

For most of the packs, engine numbers are in the standard BR blue size and should be positioned on the usual left hand end, just to the right of the cab door. Those engines in BR blue with large arrows livery had the much larger numbers on the body sides, which we have included. Railfreight grey colours usually carried black cab side numbers which again we have modelled.
Two of the designs featured white numbers painted directly underneath the nameplates: D47-4L 47142 "TRACTION" (a silver painted name, also supplied with black numbers) & D47-4Y 47370 "THUNDERBIRD".

47532 & 47481 also carried 25th anniversary stickers.
Red Rum's head featured on 47325, St George's shield on 47320,
and a flaky Raven with added Hill graffito.

47367 "KENNY COCKBIRD" carried the Stratford depot Cockney Sparrow under the name. "WILD SWAN" 47003 carried the modern Eastfield depot Scottie dog. Another unique one was "TYNWALD" 47352, the only Dutch liveried engine. "KINGFISHER" 47217, "CENTURION" 47301 and "MERIDIAN" 47302, all featured the coloured Thornaby depot logos.
1990 saw a 25th anniversary celebration at the Tinsley depot, special "25 Ti" stickers were applied to some engines - those feature in packs D47-4c 47481 "SUNSTAR", D47-4d 47532 "BLUE PETER", D47-4h 47186 "SILVER JUBLEE",
D47-4#J "SCEPTRE", D47-4#M 47431 "SILURIAN", D47-4#c 47446 "GALTEE MORE" and D47-4#a 47454 "VELOCITY".
You will usually need to remove the original numbers on your model before fitting the replacement numbering decals - usually some methylated or white spirits on a cotton bud will lift off factory printing.
From Bachmann, 37-800DS & 37-802, standard models of 47404 Hadrian & un-named 47035 respectively, make a suitable base BR blue model for most of the name decal options - they have the appropriate sealed beam marker lights in plated over headcode boxes (not a domino headcode as shown in the catalogue, and so released wrong for the 47035 engine!). Another one that is correct would be the Limited Edition 47408 Finsbury Park, done for the Deltic Preservation Society. Heljan's latest releases include an un-numbered BR blue large arrows model, item code 47421. As mostly the buffer beams on Tinsley engines were black and the headcode area yellow, some painting is required there to alter some of those models. In past years Heljan, Lima and Hornby have all made suitable models of Class 47 engines. Lima's model of 47301 was of course ideal to name as Centurion - only the name missing on the model, but our supplied Kingfisher logo makes a more detailed replacement. Heljan released a model of Tinsley engine 47299 "ARIADNE" as item reference 47744, Lima also released a model as reference 5035, we have decals if you want to make your own version.

When named during the eighties, generally the Tinsley engines had one centre underframe box section, with original buffer beam cowlings and headcode domino marker lights. Later named engines were in the twin box "intermediate" underframe format, sometimes with the buffer beam cowlings cut away. For Heljan models the buffer beams and underframe tanks are separate clip-on mouldings that are easily swapped with spare parts that can be obtained from a service dealer.
The tables below include a graphic representation of the body form and livery of each engine, together with the date of naming.
