D24-*     GRAND CENTRAL RAIL HSTS £11.99/£9.99/£7.99/£5.99

Grand Central Rail began High Speed Train services from Sunderland to London King's Cross in November, 2007. Using modern HST sets painted mostly in black, the first engine ends in service were the buffer fitted: 43067, 43080, 43084 and 43123. The company logo with a winged orange button appears on each vehicle in the train set. During 2010 the logo was changed and for the coaches made larger, a broad orange stripe was introduced at this time running along the bottom of the units. Engines bearing the new logo include: 43465, 43467, 43468 and 43480.

In 2008/9 Hornby released coaches and then a super-detailed HST power car model for the original logo livery - however there were problems: the logos should have had black lettering, not red, and the web site address was printed in the wrong colour under logos that were sometimes described as "wonky" with not very good shading. Nothing has been released by Graham Farish or Dapol so far in N scale. With our decal packs you can fix or update those logos on the Hornby super-detailed models, or utilise earlier models, including those made by Lima, to recreate a Grand Central Rail HST set in either OO-scale 4mm or 2mm N-gauge.

Alexander Carpenter shows a comparison between pre-printed logos and our decals, on two of the super-detailed power car models. Left and front the Hornby printing, behind on the right decals from pack D24-H:

On A Model By Mark Steedman.

Mark Steedman completed the power car shown above with the latest livery logo decals. For each of the logo types, there are separate decal packs for the engine ends, with enough in a pack for a pair. Again for detailing up to six open coaches, buffet and first coaches, we have separate packs for each logo type. Note that the original coach logos were approximately half the size of the engine ones - the latest coach logos are 80% of the size on the HST engines. Only some of the original engine logos had the company web site address underneath. For the coaches the web link is placed by the left hand end door, each small square end window has a map of the route on the lower half of the glass. First class coaches have a "1" on each of the four doors. Buffet coaches have a different "Route 26 Dining" logo with a knife and fork logo on the seating end doors.

To apply our decals you will need to then paint a donor model as follows:
  • Gloss black basically all over,
  • Broad orange lower stripe for the latest logo models,
  • Orange cantrail as usual,
  • Warning yellow panel above the lights below the windscreen, and
  • For the coaches silver doors, with
  • Final finish mistings of varnish to protect the decals from scratching.
For generic modern overhead flash decals, see our D3-B or D3-C packs. Our separate D43-C and D43-D packs have light lenses to go with earlier models. Note we no longer produce 4mm OO packs with headlight lens decals included here - D24-A and D24-B.

See the More Details link from the top of the home page in The Products section. In particular, the tips on how to work with decals and model painting. The original livery coach shown below was painted by Geoff Dickens. The revised logo current livery coach was completed by Mark Steedman.

The Grand Central Rail power cars (so far) have been fitted with buffers - only the latest Hornby super-detailed models have included that feature. Hurst Models made a brass etched conversion kit, designed for a pair of earlier OO 4mm Hornby models, which is quite straight forward to fit after cutting away a section of the nose. It is also possible to use that kit with the Lima tooled models - they are regularly sold on eBay so fitted! For N 2mm-gauge, Taylor Precision Models and BH Enterprises made similar buffer conversion kits.
