D48-X      EURO CARGO RAIL CLASS 66 NO LONGER AVAILABLE

Due to licensing issues we are no longer able to make or sell these decals - this page is for reference only!

Way back in 2008 we asked DB Schenker for permission to produce various decals with their logos, but we got no response until September 2015 when the UK office finally contacted us to complain about our Euro Cargo Rail decals (ECR). They offered license terms to cover EWS, EW&S and ECR logos, all brands now owned by DB Schenker. However the initial costs of a license would be more than the total sales of all such decals to date. We have never produced the Beastie decals and now sadly we are no longer able to produce ECR decals. Without the ECR logo the rest of our details would not really work.

Fox Transfers do produce EWS Beastie logo decals under license, after a break of some years with no production due to these issues of delayed money hunting legal departments. The license that Fox now have does cover ECR items, but they had not had the time or demand to produce any art work. Because we think the most important thing is that modellers, even if it's only a handful, can get what they want for their private hobby, we discussed the matter with Fox and sent them all of our ECR art work for free - so our ECR decals are soon to be manufactured again and sold directly by Fox Transfers.

Because there are links on the web to this page, despite removing it from our site indexing, we have updated this text and keep the rest of the original ordering page for reference only - there is no facilty to order these decals here, please contact Fox Transfers:

Euro Cargo Rail (ECR) launched in 2005 as a French subsidiary of English Welsh & Scottish Railways (EWS). Both were taken over by German company DB Schenker in 2007. Some 50 EWS liveried modern Class 66 engines were branded with "Euro Cargo Rail" logos in place of "EWS" lettering, additional continental signage was applied to the body and bogies, including a large data panel for the cab sides with a unique check-sum code number for each engine. Some engines have "EWSI" lettering on the nose ends, most have an ECR logo. 66123 and 66028 were the first to have new "DB" logos in place of the EWS "Beasties" cab side stickers - presumably more engines will have "DB" stickers added. Snow ploughs were fitted to all engines, they also have the cab side mirrors that are common to other EWS Class 66 engines.

Although mostly based on mainland Europe, ECR 66s are often to be seen on UK rails, mainly in pairs working "Sandite" trains for Autumn rail treatment, but they also appear heading up coal and other freight trains. The most widely UK travelled, judging by Flikr photos with lots of different loads seen behind it, would seem to be 66062 and 66191. For real photos of those and the "DB" branded 66123, see the following links:

We created a selection of Euro Cargo Rail decals with specific Class 66 numbers for various scales: G-scale 1:29th, 7mm O, 4mm OO, 3.5mm HO-scale and 2mm N-gauge. Packs mostly intended to convert an already EWS livery model - for 66028 and 66123 there are no "Beasties" on the engines. Particular real features of a given engine were reproduced faithfully to match in service photographs - for example, the fading of cab side data panel numbers on one end of 66123.

We had produced:
  • Numbers for sides and nose ends,
  • Euro Cargo Rail side logos,
  • EWSI or Euro Cargo Rail logo nose end details as appropriate,
  • International signage panels,
  • Data panels specific for each engine,
  • Engine end numbering panels,
  • White bogie markings for the chosen engine,
  • Wasp-stripe markings for ploughs, front valences and buffer shanks.
Overhead flash decals can be found in our separate D3-* packs.
Note we do not supply EWS "Beasties" in any of our packs - Fox Transfers have that license.

Model Rail magazine featured our decals in their April 2013 issue. Clearly inspired by that, the editorial team decided to release a ready-to-run model of 66062 and we offered re-numbering decals for that, without the plough and valence wasp stripe decals, but with black buffer shank stripes that were left off the models. The side number and Euro Cargo Rail logo would both need to be changed to match, the additional bogie lettering decals should be applied, signage decals may also be useful to adjust the positions for a given engine.

We commissioned 3D printed wing mirrors and ploughs for 4mm OO-scale and G-scale 1:29th, as well as ploughs alone for N 2mm models. We now print these ourselves, each being a robust simple representation that quickly complete an ECR model. See K7-* and K8-* items in the Marketplace section of our site.

ECR 66062 Finished By Whistlestop Weathering.

The late David Briggs of Whistlestop Weathering completed the above model with expert weathering effects
- he and his fabulous work will be sorely missed.

For reference these were the options we prepared, but sadly are no longer produced or on sale due to the licensing issues.

We will need photographs clearly showing the cab side data panel check-sum number for any engine number not already listed above.

For best results with Class 66 models, the steps to follow in applying the decals are:
  • Take a painted donor model with printed numbers removed,
  • Gloss with Johnson's Klear floor polish to ensure a good base for the decals,
  • Apply more Johnson's Klear or use Microscale MicroSet to act as wet glue,
  • Roughly cut out the decals, soak and slide into place, press down with a sponge,
  • Apply Microscale MicroSol decal softening solution to help bed down in the ridges,
  • When dry, coat with Johnson's Klear or Microscale MicroSet to seal the decals,
  • Finish with satin varnish - built up in fine mist layers to avoid shrinkage.
