D77-E/.../#     GWR 2015 GREEN REFURBISHMENT LIVERY £2.00-£44.99

On 21st September 2015, First Group, the owners of the modern Great Western Railway train operating company, launched a new livery. Initially one High Speed Train set, a Night Riviera sleeper train hauled by a pair of Class 57 engines, another 57 engine, three Class 166 multiple units and a Class 08 shunter were painted in the new dark green colour. Three 150s and a 153 were later added, along with four unusual 3-cars and a 2-car Class 158. On 23rd October 2016, to celebrate the reopenning of the Servern Tunnel, the first HST set was additionally branded with large dragon "Y Cymro The Welshman" markings. 166204 was given vinyl names in 2016 to honour "Norman Topsom MBE". Large cast metal letters for "GWR" are applied to the HST and Class 57 engines, although not for the 08 shunter. For coaches a vinyl version of the "GWR" lettering in silver with an inset etched surface effect and matching lines of various lengths with the same surface effect. The "GWR" logos are placed in matte varnished diagonal bands against the otherwise gloss of the bodywork. The 08 shunter had a vinyl logo added during 2016.

The future for GWR - new Javelin trains.

In August 2015 we were asked by the company's brand publicity team, "Golin", to produce decals for a mock-up Javelin model to be made by "Roads and Rails" for a TV appearance. BBC's The One Show broadcast the feature about refurbishment of the line through Box Tunnel on 17th November 2015, featuring the above model to represent the new trains planned to replace HST sets after the electrification of the line. At the time of filming industrial action had been threatened with union objections to the proposed staffing changes for the new type of trains. Some further pre-launch models of the other real subjects were also produced by Geoff Cartwright, and these are shown below - they did not have all of the final markings. There was an uncredited front cover model for issue 228 of Model Rail Magazine, November 2016, done by Dave Lowery appearing in a Chris Leigh feature on coastal railways.

The main green paint colour can be mixed from 6ml of Revell SM350 (Dark Blue) in a 50ml tin of Phoenix Precision P323 Southern Dark Olive. Remember that all carrier based decals need to be applied to gloss surfaces to avoid silvering bubbles, we also recommend the use of Johnson's Klear which we sell in our MarketPlace section of the site. Humbrol Enamel clear spray varnishes were then used to finish the models shown below: overall satin varnish, matte for the bands. Some Hornby models are to be released with a mainly gloss finish. If you find that different varnish finishes alone don't stand out enough, you might try slightly lightening the band by adding a tiny amount of white paint to the matte varnish. The Mk3 bands are 2cm wide in 4mm OO scale, 1cm for 2mm N-gauge, set at an angle of 18 degrees left of vertical. On the 150 and 166 DMUs the bands lean in both directions and we have scaled gaps in our lining decals.

We've separated our decal print layouts in to various sections so that we can print enough decals for whatever you want to model. As well as the HST, Class 57 and 08 engine packs we have various coach decal options. For our Mk3 coach numbers we print three of each of all of the real numbers, along with the relevant coach lining decals. We use a thicker carrier for easier application of the long thin one piece lining decals. In a separate layout for coach letters, GWR logos and other markings, we print enough for either six 4mm OO scale coaches or ten 2mm N-gauge Mk3 coaches of any type. For the 166 units we provide air con grill decals as the models have them in the wrong place. Metallic silver printing precisely replicates all of the actual markings.

GWR said they plan to complete the repainting of all their stock by 2018 - we are able to produce further different numbers as they appear for custom orders. There are ten 166's as of November 2016, four 150's and four 158's comprised of three motor end cars (no proper centre car). A 2-car 158766 was added in June 2017.

GWR Class 255 Castle HST Power Car Names & Numbers

From 2019 HST power cars started to be renamed with cast "Castle" nameplates. 34 designs have been created as of August 2023. Each has a picture of the particular castle named with an HST set driving in front of it. More names are expected to be be fitted over the coming years. Although all are now cast nameplates, intially some (we're not sure which) were applied as flat vinyls in the same design. To represent the cast names we have a drop-shaded design, with a flat un-shaded for the vinyl ones. The model shown above was made by Dave Lowery for presentation to the company.
