HAYABUSA (NMT) DECALS
| £19.99/£17.99/£9.99/£6.99 |
"Hayabusa" is Japanese for "falcon", the name chosen for the UK's first hybrid locomotive, powered by a combination battery/diesel traction system, developed by Hitachi working with partners Porterbrook, Network Rail and Brush Traction. The aim, to deliver improvements in performance while reducing energy consumption and poluting emissions.
Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are held in an adapted Mk3 TGS coach 977996 that is permanently coupled as a modern tender to a re-engineered Class 43 HST power car 43089. The batteries are charged by regenerative braking for station stops and all other brake applications. Because additional battery power is available during acceleration, a smaller diesel engine and cooling system can be used, reducing the overall weight and fuel costs. The train can accelerate out of a station on battery power alone, and at night with the diesel engine shut off, shunting on battery power is almost silent.
The new engine was completed in April 2007 and was painted in Network Rail yellow. The 3D bird nameplates from the historic Brush Class 53 "Falcon" were re-cast with the new "Hayabusa" name, to be fitted with the various vinyl brandings of the development partners.
From May of 2007, Hayabusa ran tests on the Great Central Railway (GCR) in a four car train, including conventional HST power car 43160, named "Porterbrook" in navy blue First Great Western style livery, and converted Mk 2 coach 977974 in Network Rail yellow:

Through the summer of 2007 it ran on the main line for further load testing hauling several ordinary Midland Mainline (MML) liveried Mk 3 coaches with converted Mk3 buffet coach 977984 (replacing the GCR test 977974):
By September 2007 "Hayabusa" joined the New Measurement Train (NMT), all in Network Rail yellow livery - also known as the "Flying Banana", with Network Rail's 43014 power car on the other end of the rake:
Hurst Models made etched side conversion panels for two different complete NMT formations (for OO see CK3400 & CK3401, in N it's NC3400 & NC3401) - prior to the use of the "Hayabusa" engine and tender coach. Hurst Models also made a full sheet of "Trainsfers" (in OO - TFM702, for N - NTF702) for the Network Rail livery applied to those trains. The special nose camera fitted to power car 43014 was available for 4mm OO separately (CK3404) along with the etched buffer conversion kit required (LDP010). For N 2mm, Taylor Precision Models and BH Enterprises made etched kits - for BH Enterprises see the L111 item for the DVT buffer beam.
Here's a link to a photo showing the coaches for those wanting to scratch build such adaptations:

For special request we could change the numbers in the coach and power car packs - just Contact Us.
We would like to thank Network Rail in particular for their co-operation on this one - supplying their logo in a ready to use vector graphics form, which is a first for any company that we've approached regarding permission to model - outstanding!
The completed models shown above were made by Mark Steedman - the Mk 3 battery car, based on a Trailer Guard Second, uses an underframe from a Mk 2 coach.
