L51*/BL51*    FIXED MODERN TRACTION HEADCODES £5.00/£2.50/£1.50 Diesel and electric locomotives initially made use of headcodes to indicate train type and destination. It involved a system of rolling blinds, illuminated from the rear. In these packs we have prepared complete headcode panels for specific model types. Each one of the general codes has been modelled on a photograph of the correct engine type in service - reproducing the exact vertical alignment of the real codes shown. For models like the Hornby Western in the image, our scale headcode panels are a big improvement on original undersized and unrepresentative codes. The headcodes are offered on two materials: Backlit Film - BL51* packs - with a translucent white non-adhesive plastic film, designed to go inside Heljan models with light boxes so that the headcodes can be illuminated. Labels - L51* packs - self-adhesive waterproof printed thin paper labels, suitable for models by Bachmann, Lima and Hornby, where external application is required.   For the Western Class 52 engines, we have various BL51*/L51* headcode packs with headcodes that match particular engine numbers. In addition to those engine number headcodes, the "A" and "E" headcode packs contain the same assortment of 54 general headcode panels (25 different pairs), as used prior to 1976. The "A", "C" and "E" packs include large dot marker panels as carried exclusively by D1023. Our other packs for Hymek Class 35 "F", Class 47 "G", Deltic Class 55 "H", Peak Class 4x "I", Class 25 "J" and Class 27 "K" packs, contain a selection of general codes including the "0O00", ". . . ." and large domino dot marker panels as appropriate. To sum it up, the format of the codes used was: number, letter, number, number. Where the first number would indicate the type of train, letters on the second blind indicated specific destinations and areas by region. The final two numbers completed a unique code for the working - famous named trains often used the same codes daily. Between 1973 and 1976 the system was phased out: most codes were set to show “0O00” or “. . . .” until the boxes could be modified or removed. Western region engines would commonly display their running numbers. Where the boxes were retained, the four character displays were ultimately replaced with perspex sheets showing large dot marker lights.
