As this layout is currently just a collection of rolling stock I have not expanded it into as many sections as the S&ARR section. This page contains all the general details about the planned layout, there are then a further three pages dealing with the rolling stock for the layout.

Firstly what is On30? The HOn30 page describes how that combination allows modelling narrow gauge lines using models built to one commercialy supported scale using the track gauge from another, smaller, supported scale. On30 is similar, but larger scale, as it combines O and HO. When HO/OO gauge track (16.5mm) is used on an O scale (1:43.5 UK / 1:48 US) layout it scales out close to 30" gauge. The combination is also known as On2½, O16.5 or Oe.

I began building in On30 as a change from what I had previously, and was currently, working in. Having previously worked in N scale, 009 and HOn3 I wanted to try something in a larger scale, and also using a track gauge of larger than 9mm.

From the outset this layout was intended to be completely freelance with no attempt to portray any actual existing line. It would be a 'might-have-been' version of a common carrier narrow gauge line. This would allow me to create not only the line and its history, but also freely create the rolling stock which would run on the line.

The first On30 layout I plan to build will be base on the Inglenook Sidings trackplan. This is the simplest plan which will allow sufficient operation for the stock I am building. Designing the layout around Chivers On30 freight cars (and similarly sized scratch built stock) the whole operable layout should fit on a board not much more than 4 feet long. This length allows the use of a single board while still allowing the layout to be portable.

For motive power I have two Model Power 0-4-0 diesel chassis which I hope to use. I will either add a larger cab or replace the body completely with a boxcab type structure representing either wood or steel. After that I do have my eye on the Bachmann Porter 0-4-2.

As this layout was never intended to be particularly prototypical I have not given much consideration to which location it will represent. Because I have the L&GC in the South West US, and am planning a future layout in the North East, I though I might pick an opposite 'corner'. With this design criteria I may place the layout in Montana. Having said that, after viewing the stock I am building, and knowing that I will try and model it in a slightly run-down condition, I may decide to set it in Cuba - watch this space!
