MK1 PULLMAN PANELS

---|
Metro-Cammell built 44 Mk 1 Pullman cars in 1960. Bachmann now produce models of the five body types, including the unique bar car built for the Tees-Tyne Pullman service. Previously the bodies have been modelled by Trix and in etched kit form by Comet. Although the window and interior formats differ greatly, the exterior umber side panels were all identical in size and pattern.
The Bachmann models have a number of small errors in the detail, including:
The PULLMAN logo lettering is too small and doesn't stand out as well as it should, |
Umber panels should be edged with buff lining where they meet the cream stripe, |
The cream stripe is too deep - it was only 1 inch above and below the window frames, |
Lower panel lining and names should be buff not golden yellow as used on earlier cars, |
The coat of arms, crudely line drawn, was in reality solid gold shaded transfers, |
Lettering on the solebar and ends ("C1" etc) should all be in buff not white. |

Livery problems can be largely fixed with our custom side panel pairs, while giving you the option to have any name that you wish - real or otherwise. Printed on a thin glossy film material, they are designed to fit precisely and match the coach finish and colouration as closely as possible. Having both bottom SL20 and top SL21 umber panels gives the best effect. To fix the white lettering, and turn it buff, we recommend simply wiping over the printing with, for example, a Stabilo Boss orange highlighter pen. Click on the image to expand it and compare before and after views.
With our top logo panels we include a set of car letters for the lettering brackets (the vertical lines either side by the doors), so that a rake can be marked out as "A", "B", "C", through to "I".

The original white roof livery soon got dirty and grey was seen after a short time. There were no brake coaches made in the Pullman Mk1 style. Much earlier designs of smooth sided Pullman brakes were used with rakes of Mk1 Pullmans until the mid sixties, then standard full brakes were used along with a general change of livery to corporate blue. Note although not always an exact match, you might wish to top and tail rakes of Mk1s with either Hornby R233/4313 Queen Of Scots or their illuminated new K-Type models - generally the R233/4313 bodies are more accurate for the formations. The Mk1 cars were phased out with the introduction of HST sets in 1978. Several were preserved, EAGLE and EMERALD were repainted to the original Pullman colours for the NRM and used in special trains during 1979.
The cars were used in the Queen Of Scots, Master Cutler, Yorkshire and Tees-Tyne Pullman services. Example formations were as follows:
