WEST COAST RAILWAYS OO 4MM DECALS
| £4.99/£9.99/£19.99 |
Britain's largest operator of special charter trains is West Coast Railways. Based in Carnforth, they run a fleet of claret coloured diesel engines, including classes 33, 37, 47 and 57. They also provide ex-BR rolling stock of various kinds. With permission and assistance from the marketing team at WCR, we are able to offer the essential decals for repainting a model fleet of your own. Our decals are being added to and updated as the precise livery details change and new engines are added. 37676 Loch Rannoch was added to the fleet in July 2008, at first without the Scottie dog logos. Loch Laidon, the name first carried by 37214 with Scottie dogs on, was moved to 37516 without, at the end of 2013. By July 2009, two un-named Class 37 engines were back in traffic in WCR colours - 37516 & 37706. 47826 carried an advertisement for the Scarborough Spa Express steam train on one side of the engine from 2010 to 2012.

First in model form, Hornby released 47854 in 2005 to represent original "reverse Fragonset" maroon, with a gold-lined black body-side arrow-headed stripe. The main colour should be a match for the BR maroon used on coaching stock, as distinct from the later darker claret colour where the company logo is applied. The arrow heads on one side were incorrectly angled compared with the other side. The first photo shows the bad side of the model, with only our decal for the new company logo applied as a colour test. The arrow stripe fault could be corrected with our other decals. The main body colour does look rather dark compared with say maroon coaches, so this makes possibly a useful starting point to model a current logo applied claret coloured engine, after removing the pre-printed stripes.

Next up was a model of 33207 from Heljan, first released in 2007, made to represent the current claret and logo livery, but without the nameplates "Jim Martin" that have been fitted to the real thing. The Heljan claret colour looks way too dark, even darker than the Hornby model. It's hard to distinguish the black shading of the printed logo against the body and the data panels are just too small. We note also that the real engine does not actually have any red tail lights, unlike other 33/2 types. We offer filmless no-carrier mirror finish silver decal plates to name that engine, along with nameplates for other engines in the fleet. More shiny than etchings, no glue is required to fit them, they go between the last two side windows on the opposite end to the logo on each side, level with the frame tops.
Building a model of Loch Arkaig, 37248, using some of our pre-production tranfers, featured in the March 2008 issue of the Model Rail magazine. For 2009 they have arranged a finished limited edition model with Bachmann, to be sold through the magazine.
Finally for OO scale engines, Vi Trains announced two un-named models of 37706 and 47787 in the WCR livery for 2009.
With the exception of their unique 57/6 engine, WCR livery locos now carry a claret colour with a side logo in a flat warm yellow called "old gold" - 57601 still carries the same lighter BR maroon colouring with body-side black and gold stripes as once on 47854, with smaller metallic gold logos on the nose end. Most engines use the same "old gold" colour for the cab side numbers, although some are white - the colour and font used has also changed over time. An unusual format of data panel is carried by the fleet, employing two text sizes within one outline frame, "CLASS X/Y" appears in a larger font and the data is aligned differently to other usual modern types.

We present decal packs for each of the named engines, which include sets of three each of:
- West Coast Railways logos on clear film,
- Filmless nameplates,
- Cab side numbers, data panels and any 10A shed plates on clear carrier.
To model the original livery on 47854 and the current livery of 57601, our packs for those include the side stripes as filmless decals.
The Scottie Dog depot detail that Loch Arkaig, Loch Laidon and Loch Rannoch now carry are included in those packs. While the pack for Jim Martin 33207 includes the nose end blue stars applied to that engine. As yet we've not released decals to cover the latest un-named 37 engines, which we can do to special order - just Contact Us to ask.
Don't forget that elsewhere in our range we offer the most accurate modern engine door kicker plates - see L72B in the Various Regions section of the Precision Labels listings. Overhead warning flash stickers are also available here as Precision Decals - see D3-B in the Stock section. Other than that all you'll need is some paint!

For best resolution, we also supply the 47826 advertising picture printed on JetCal waterslide media.
Some of the coaches belonging to the company also carry the WCR logo on otherwise as preserved BR maroon livery Mk1s. The coach logos are slightly smaller than on the engines. Some coaches in the WCR fleet have also been named. In the Stock section of the site we present coach logo and name decals.
